Myoujin Yahiko
Debut: Manga Ch03 | Anime Ep02
Age: 10 (beginning). 15 (end).
Birthday: August XX, 1868
Seiyuus: Miina Tominaga | Wendee Lee

Background: After Yahiko's parents passed away, he was taken in by a Yazuka group that forced him to work in order to pay off a debt his parents never owed. After being caught pick-pocketing, Kenshin and Kaoru take Yahiko in and begin teaching him swordmanship. He is very determined to be as great of a swordsman as Kenshin is and is often seen taking on challenges against opponents. The creator Watsuki says that Yahiko is a boy who "knows a pain that hero-types like Kenshin and Sanosuke can never know". Yahiko is at first seen as childish and immature, but grows to become a great swordsman like Kenshin through the principles of the Kamiya Kasshin-Ryu style. Very much like Kenshin, Yahiko only hopes to protect the ones he loves and hold close to him (such as Tsubame and Kaoru).

(credit) Yahiko is a samurai descendant. Yahiko's father died during the Battle of Ueno during the Boshin War, slain at the Keneiji Temple. His mother died of syphilis in a brothel to put food on their table not long after giving birth to her son. Yahiko was originally forced to live as a thief for the local Yakuza, who tricked him into believing that he still had to pay off the money the gangsters gave to his mother to buy medicine.

" I haven't sunk so low that I take pity from strangers. "

techniques

Yahiko uses a bamboo shinai instead of a bokken which is used by the masters of the Kamiya Kasshin-Ryu style (Kaoru's family). According to Kaoru, Yahiko is the strongest child in Japan and is so skilled that by the end of the series, he is able to catch a blade using only two knuckles, earning him the title as the "man who has caught 1000 blades".

HADOME - A defensive technique where the user crosses their arms over their head (works in other places as well) and catches the blade with the back of their hands. It is a risky technique in that it can give the opponent an opening if the timing is not perfect/on time. However, if successful, the user can maintain a good grip on their sword while catching the oponent's blade at the same time.
HIWATARI - An offensive technique where it counter-attacks an opponent's attack, but can only be performed after a successful Hadome technique. From the Hadome position, the user twists their wrist to force their opponent to release their sword and possibly throw them onto the ground. From there, the user can attack the defenseless opponent.
HADACHI: Blade Break - A master secret counter-attack of the Kamiya Kasshin-Ryu style which is used after the opponent swings their sword. The opponent's blade is caught barehanded between the fingers and palm of the dominant hand (blade edge pointing down). It cuts the user's palm, but not enough to cause the user to be unable to fight.
RYUTSUISEN (Dragon Hammer Strike) - A technique Yahiko uses when he is facing Kariwa Henya of the Juppongatana's where he grabs a screen door and uses it as a leverage so he can go higher than his opponent. He then brings his bamboo shinai down on his opponent from above.
RYUSHOSEN (Soaring Dragon Flight) - Yahiko is seen using this technique in his battle against Kujiranami Hyogo.
